In 2013, one morning a few weeks after the new day care cent with Rashtrotthana Parishat started, a 24-year-old girl was brought into the day care supported by 2 people. She could not walk and her skin tone seemed abnormal - thanks to the heavy iron overload.
The next edition of the Sankalp-Cure2Children Network meeting for BMT was organised on 4&5 June 2019 at People Tree Hospitals, Bangalore. The two day meeting held every six months is an opportunity for our transplant teams to get together and brainstorm - contributing to the fine outcomes.
In September 2018, we took our mission for "Thalassemia Free India" further by signing up the MoUs to replicate our model of comprehensive care and management for thalassemia in more regions.
A new step forward has been made in our mission to ensure that children suffering from Thalassemia get proper care and management with the inauguration of the new Thalassemia Day Care Centre at RMM Global Hospital Trauma Centre at Abu Road in Rajasthan on 1st October 2018.
ThalMeet 2018, the meeting of thalassemia centre who aim at harmonising Thalassemia Care and strengthen last mile delivery was organised on 21 and 22 May 2018 in Bangalore.
Measurability is the cornerstone of good care and management. In the year 2017-18 across the 4 day care centres part of the Sankalp Program for Thalassemia Management a total of 900 patients received 13,000 bags of blood. This excludes those who got cured or who got transferred.
The most essential aspect of caring for severe thalassemia syndromes (ST) with the inability to spontaneously maintain haemoglobin levels more than 7 gm/dl is a good blood transfusion service.
On 3rd December 2017, Department of Pediatrics, Rural Development Trust, Ananthpur organised the 1st CME on Thalassemia. Attended by pediatricians from Ananthpur and nearby districts, the event was very well received and productive.
Delivering equitable healthcare is a global challenge. There are certain groups of patients which continue to perform poorly on clinical indicators compared to other patients. Gender, socio-economic status, distance from treatment centre and parental education are well established factors which influence the treatment outcomes.
Thanks to the amazing success of the centres part of the Sankalp-Cure2Children network for Pediatric BMT, we are receiving more and more requests from families who have a thalassemic kid looking for the option of cure. While we do guide them on a case by case basis there are some key points which we have observed.
This Independence Day brought a new cheer and new hope to the coastal city of Mangalore. Sankalp India Foundation took a new step towards providing systematic care and management for many more children by setting up a thalassemia day care centre at District Wenlock Hospital.
